Rückblick 2 | 2012 «What President Barack Obama Could Have Learned In Cambodia»

Dr. Beat Richner in November 2012, Jayavarman VII Hospital, Siem Reap

Obama was in Cambodia for 24 hours. 10 days after his brilliant victory speech in Chicago:…“ And I saw just the other day, in Mentor, Ohio, where a father told the story of his 8 year-old daughter, whose long battle with leukemia nearly costs their family everything had it not been for health care reform passing just a few months before the insurance company was about to stop paying for her care”…

King Norodom Sihanouk’s daughter Kantha Bopha has died by leukemia. 1962 Sihanouk built the first children’s hospital in Cambodia and has given to it the name of His beloved daughter: The Hospital Kantha Bopha. 1969 the public health system under the rule of Sihanouk (1953, after independence from France, to 1970, overthrown by CIA) was better developed than in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. All was destroyed by the war, which started by the so called “secret war” by the Kissinger/Nixon administration. During 4 month time their B52 were dropping bombs over the country, destroying 2/5 of the country and killing half a million people. The CIA has overthrown the head of state Norodom Sihanouk.

1992 we restored Kantha Bopha from the ground zero. In the meantime there are 5 Hospitals covering up to 90 % of all sick children! All access is free for all. All treatment, all medicines and drugs, all is free for all. (Including Leukemia). 80 % of children, hospitalized in our hospitals, are from families with a daily income of less than a Dollar. So nobody is excluded from the human right getting correct and efficient treatment. The poor is not discriminated. There is justice, there are no doctors running after money, extorting parents, keep-ing patients “kidnapped” for money. No overpaid insurance companies, no unnecessary administrators and health officials taking money. Our Hospitals are showing worldwide the best correlation costs / healing rate. So Kantha Bopha is a model for the whole world how health care for children can be realized free and fair.

Without Kantha Bopha thousands of children would have died and would die, month by month. 90 % of the budget are private donations. USA, as told by the former ambassador of USA in Cambodia, could not contribute a single Dollar to Kantha Bopha, because the patients do not pay by themselves. As told before, 80% have no cash to pay. Even they have no cash to start a single day of the battle against leukemia. The western governments prefer to pay millions to programs by International Organizations, and nobody knows later, where the money disappeared. The International Malaria Fund in Cambodia got the last 10 years more than 230 Million USD. What happened to this money? That is only one example. There are others more. By 36 Million USD we hospitalized 2011 120 000 severely sick children. 80 % would not have survived without this hospitalization. We hoped that Barack Obama would come to learn how to realize a better health care system of justice.
